In today’s post, we are going to highlight the second module :
In this one-week module, we will face a challenging question :
“How does temperature influence life on Earth?”
To answer this question you will have to understand that the laws of physics are found everywhere and they govern life on Earth.
From thermal conduction, diffusion and enzymatic activity, to population growth and ecosystem changes, the laws of thermodynamics affect all scales in living systems.
This week will be also full of projects where you will continue to apply and practice the skills and knowledge acquired during the first module. You will implement a simplified computational diffusion model, construct your own digital thermometer, and read and analyze scientific articles. You will also conduct experiments on the level of molecules, cells and populations to see how the temperature of the environment impacts living systems.
Finally, at the end of the week, you will get a chance to conduct your first research project where you will apply all the basic skills needed to perform an experiment to answer a scientific question.
The cherry on the cake : you will present your work to your colleagues so they can benefit from your mistakes, improvements and possible breakthroughs!
I remember when I was attending this week of intense projects myself, I was super excited and full of joy because it was the first time I saw what it meant to work in a lab and I felt what it means to wear a “lab coat” of a researcher. You can check the projects my teammates and I worked on here. In the meantime I improved my skills through the many projects that followed and I hope I will still improve further through many projects I will do myself or learn from the ones you will do 😉
Thermal Wars module is a preparation for the more challenging and exciting research projects that will come in the next modules!
For your hard work and increased skills, you will acquire a second OpenBadge! So stay tuned, keep in mind what you will learn, it is going to be useful for the summer semester and beyond.

See you really soon,
